Science Fairs

The District encourages students to participate in Science Fairs in the following ways:

We mentor students working on water, recycled water and wastewater projects, especially if they require "laboratory" expertise. To request a mentor, contact the Lori Martin, Community Affairs Administrative Assistant at 925-875-2282.
We "interview" elementary students regarding their science projects submitted to the Science Fun Fair that involves 14 elementary schools in Dublin and Pleasanton.

Science Fun Fairs

On Monday, March 16, 2009 4,125 elementary school students participated in the Science Fun Fair. This is the sixth year that Dublin and Pleasanton combined their school science fairs. In 2009, seven District employees interviewed 42 students about their science projects.

Approximately 10,210 parents and children attended the evening Science Family Fun Night at the Alameda County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, March 17, 2009. The District demonstrated the watershed diorama all evening, distributed water conservation tips with shower flow meter bags, and gave out “cootie catchers.”

Tri Valley Science and Engineering Fair

The District was one of eight sponsors of the 2009 Tri-Valley Science and Engineering Fair, an annual event that brings together opinion leaders from across the valley, plus parents, teachers, and students from middle and high schools in Dublin, San Ramon, Dougherty Valley, Pleasanton, Livermore, Sunol, and Danville.

To further reinforce its services and identity, the District sponsored a special award for Excellence in Recycled Water and Wastewater Research. Judy Zavadil and Senior Environmental Chemist Raj Gumber judged three pertinent projects in the Junior Division (grades 7-8) and six in the Senior Division (grades 9-12).

“Can String Beans Grow in Salt Water Conditions?” by Krista Sawchuk a 9th grader. In addition to observing how the plants reacted to various concentrations of salt in irrigation water, she designed a chemical test to measure how much salt each plant had absorbed.

“Piping Cold Water” by Stephen Brown, an 8th grader at Livermore Valley Charter School. He tested pipes made of five different materials to determine which material holds up best under the pressure of freezing water. Our judges were impressed with how well the experiment’s design replicated actual conditions and his awareness of the importance of materials to engineering.

Expanding Your Horizons in Mathematics and Science,
a Career Conference for Young Women

Annually, the District participates in the Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics (EYH) career conference for 6th to 12th grade young women. This year’s conference was held on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at the San Ramon campus of Diablo Valley College and attended by 300 students, dozens of parent volunteers and volunteer presenters from more than 18 organizations.

Among the many workshop educators, three District employees staffed a workshop entitled "Take the Filter Challenge":

Community Affairs Supervisor Sue Stephenson taught students how to build water filters.

Environmental Compliance Inspector II Florence Khaw taught students how to operate the colorimeter to test water turbidity.
Safety Technician Jessica Rodriguez talked to students about the different types of job opportunities in the water industry.
The purpose of the EYH conference is to encourage young women to take an interest in science and math careers. The Math/Science Network started the first EYH conference at Mills College in 1976. Today, the EYH conferences are held in more than 105 locations, which altogether have received over 575,000 participants.

The conference workshops are designed for participants to gain hands-on learning experiences from female scientists and mathematicians. These role models share their career experiences and discuss their daily job duties, educational background, and aspirations in life.

The District’s workshop leaders were proud to represent DSRSD contribute to the future and development of these bright young women.
