things kids can do to conserve water

Here are a few simple things that can save hundreds, maybe thousands of gallons a year per household.

Indoors

  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
  • Dispose of trash in the garbage can or wastebasket, not the toilet.
  • Take shorter showers. Each extra minute in the shower can waste five to ten gallons of water.
  • Use your dishwashers and washing machines only when they are full of dirty dishes and dirty clothes.

Water Saving Appliances and Rebates
  • Encourage your parents to purchase appliances that conserve water and energy.

Outdoors
  • Use a broom to clean your driveway and walkways, not the hose.
  • When washing the car, use a bucket to hold soapy water and only use the hose to rinse. Do not leave the rinse water running while you are washing. And do not let the soapy water run down the driveway, along the gutter and into the storm drain. Instead, wash your car while it’s parked on the lawn or go to a professional car wash where they recycle the water.
  • Weed your garden because weeds are water thieves!
  • Water during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning. This gives the water more time to soak into the soil before wind and heat cause it to evaporate. Avoid watering on windy days.
  • Water your lawn only when it needs it and only as fast as the soil can absorb it.
If you see runoff, split the watering time into two separate cycles.
