DSRSD Opposes Water Tax Bill
SB 623 Would Establish California’s First Tax on Water
Dublin San Ramon Services District has joined more than 90 public water agencies in opposing a bill that seeks to establish the state’s first tax on water. SB 623 by Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel)—a bill aimed at funding safe drinking water solutions for disadvantaged communities—was amended on August 21 to require local water agencies to tax their ratepayers and send the money to Sacramento. We all want safe drinking water for every Californian, especially those living in disadvantaged communities. The state’s General Fund should pay the cost to remedy this public health issue directly, as a statewide obligation. This is much more efficient than requiring hundreds of local water agencies to calculate, collect, and remit a special tax. The bill also has other flaws.
