Arup Paul

Senior Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Technician

Describe your job.

I am responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing instrumentation, automation, and control systems across DSRSD facilities. My work includes installing and calibrating sensors, analyzers, and PLC‑based systems to ensure accurate data and reliable process control.

I regularly coordinate with outside vendors to evaluate equipment, resolve technical issues, and support upgrades. I also collaborate closely with the Instrumentation, Controls & Electrical (IC&E) and Mechanical Maintenance Divisions as well as the District's Operations and Engineering Departments to troubleshoot issues, support projects, and maintain safe, consistent plant operations.

What do you like best about your job?

What I enjoy most is the variety and problem‑solving involved in instrumentation and controls work. Every day brings a new challenge - whether it’s troubleshooting a complex control loop, optimizing a process, or finding a reliable solution to keep equipment running smoothly. I also appreciate the impact our work has on the community. Knowing that what we do directly supports safe, reliable water and wastewater operations is incredibly rewarding.

How did you get into the water/wastewater industry?

I entered the water and wastewater field almost by accident. I came from a strong technical background in instrumentation and controls within the manufacturing industry, which made the transition into this field relatively seamless. As I became more familiar with the work, I quickly recognized how essential skilled I&C support is to the reliability and efficiency of water and wastewater operations. That realization motivated me to pursue a long‑term career where I could apply my hands‑on experience while contributing to an essential public service. From there, new opportunities continued to open, allowing me to grow into the role I hold today.

What is the biggest challenge of your job?

One of the biggest challenges is balancing day‑to‑day troubleshooting with long‑term project work, while ensuring critical systems remain reliable. Instrumentation technology evolves quickly, and treatment processes depend heavily on accurate data, so staying current with new systems and ensuring proper integration can be demanding. At the same time, it’s one of the most rewarding aspects of the job.

What are some of your favorite hobbies?

In my free time, I enjoy traveling and exploring new places, cultures, and foods. Music is a regular part of my life, and I often unwind by listening to a variety of genres. I also enjoy reading detective and suspense stories, especially those with strong twists and detailed investigations. My all-time favorite detectives are Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. Pencil sketching gives me a creative outlet and a chance to slow down and focus. To stay active, I enjoy biking and maintaining a regular workout routine, which helps me recharge and keep a healthy balance.
